Rod length is another key factor in ice fishing. On the ice, you’re typically fishing from a stationary position, so the length of the rod needs to be adjusted accordingly.

• Short Rods (24-28 inches): Shorter rods used to be the norm for walleyes, as they offer more control and are easier to maneuver in tight spaces. The shorter length also helps with feeling subtle bites in shallow waters.

• Medium Length Rods (28-32 inches): A medium-length rod provides the best of both worlds.  They’re compact enough to easily fish in shelters.  But they give you better hook-setting power while still maintaining sensitivity.

• Long Rods (33+ inches): If you’re moving from hole to hole a lot while fishing, having a long rod can be a big help.  It allows you to fish without kneeling and gives you more room to move your bait up the water column when a walleye is chasing a lure.

For walleye fishing, I believe a rod in the 32-inch range is optimal for most anglers.

3. Material: Choose the Right Blend for Strength and Sensitivity

The material of your rod affects both its sensitivity and durability. When choosing a rod for walleyes, you'll want a balance of both.

• Fiberglass Rods: These rods are known for their durability and strength, but they tend to be less sensitive compared to graphite. However, they are a good option if you're fishing in harsh conditions and need a tougher rod.

• Composite Rods: For the best of both worlds, many anglers opt for composite rods that blend fiberglass and graphite. These rods provide good sensitivity while maintaining strength and durability.

For most walleye fishing, a 6-8 lb test line is ideal.  I prefer mono due to its stretching capabilities.  You won’t rip the hook out of a fish’s mouth when setting the hook.
